Mikef Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 Quickie question...what type of oil should be used in a Galaxy TDi (from 2002)? Is it one of the fully synthetic oils (err...5-40?)...or a 5-30...? The Ford garage in Basingstoke just sold me a litre of 5-30 for my galaxy for a topup...but I have a clanging memory atthe back of my head of a diffeent sort being mentioned in the manual. If I top up with the 5-30, am I likely to cause harm? thakns mikef Quote
Mikef Posted April 7, 2004 Author Report Posted April 7, 2004 Thanks - so it is 5W-40...wonder why they sold me 5W-30? Will it do harm if I use it? mikef Quote
seatkid Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 Many years ago, I used some Ford oil (??-30W) in my old Passat instead of the usual 20-50W. Within a couple of thousand miles it started with the blue smoke and a terminal appetite for oil. Oil does make a difference. Quote
Mikef Posted April 8, 2004 Author Report Posted April 8, 2004 Ok - cheers....I don't think I'l be taking my Galaxy to that dealer for servicing then!! I'll go by Halfords and get some 'proper' oil tonight. thanks all m Quote
NikpV Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 Had a look in Halfords locally but they had nothing that met the 505.01VW spec (lots at 505.00 which was no good :o ) Quote
rwtomkins Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 i would be really cautious about what you put in the sump of your TDI. like seatkid says, oil does matter and there's no point taking a chance. previous threads have concluded there are very few oils suitable for the TDI and probably none from halfords. you need either Ford SD 5W40 as specified in the manual, or the VW equivalent (can't remember the name but it's the one that meets VW 505.01), or Millers XFE-PD which you can get by mail order. if you can find another one that meets VW 505.01, and it must, then good luck. if you use anything else, you don't love your Gal! Mikef Posted April 8, 2004 Author Report Posted April 8, 2004 OK - thanks. What I will do is go back and try and change it for the proper stuff...I'm worried now by their statement that 'this is what we use on galaxies'.... cheers mikef Quote
NikpV Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I was dubious that my local ford dealer would use the correct oil so I asked them to give me the remaining 0.5l (4.5l for oil change) for top ups between services. So far Ive not had to top up but it gave me some assurance that 1) they did not overfill it and 2) they used the right stuff (I know. . I Know. . they may have used their standard oil  and just put 0.5l in a spare SD container to give me but short of standing over them whilst they do the change I could think of nothing else. :D )They seemed quite happy with this which means I probably misjudged them :P Quote
